Dear garden lovers and plant enthusiasts! Today we will talk about an exciting topic that can be useful for all of us: rooting houseplants. Rooting is a process that allows us to create new plants from existing plants and thereby multiply the green beauties of our garden or apartment. Let's see how to get started!
Why should you root houseplants?
Rooting houseplants has many benefits. First, it allows us to get new plants from our favorites that are already adorning our home, and with the help of rooting, we can get new plants as gifts from friends and family, or even sell them if we want.
How do we get started?
-
Let's find a canning jar: First, choose a glass of suitable size and fill it with water. My personal favorite is the mason jar! :)
-
Cut the stem : Cut the desired length of stem from the mother plant, making sure to leave at least two or three leaves on it.
-
Preparation : Remove the leaves from the lower part of the stem, because they must not touch the water, because rotting starts. If you want to be sure, dip the cutting end in a rooting hormone, which promotes the formation of roots.
-
Place it : As I wrote before, in the case of rooting in water, make sure that only the cut end goes into the water and that the leaves do not touch it.
-
Care and waiting: Make sure that there is adequate light in the rooting area, but do not expose it to direct sunlight. You can also add a very small amount of liquid nutrient solution to the water, which in my experience speeds up the process. Look at your plants every few days and change the water if you see that it is cloudy.
Perlite or sphagnum moss can be an alternative rooting medium. There are plants that, without rooting in water, simply stick into the ground and take root over time. Examples include Christmas cactus, geraniums or certain types of mother-in-law's tongue!
Which plants are suitable for rooting?
Many indoor plants are suitable for rooting. However, it is important to remember that not all plants respond to rooting in the same way, so it is always worth finding out about the needs of the specific variety in advance.
Green joys
Rooting houseplants is not only a practical way to get new plants, but also a creative and enjoyable activity. New sources of green joy are these small plants, which we grow and take care of with our own hands. So it doesn't matter whether you are a beginner or an experienced gardener, feel free to try rooting houseplants and enjoy the proximity of nature in your home!
